A few days inside an Ayurveda retreat can show you a very different side of Sri Lanka one where the day moves more slowly and wellbeing becomes part of the journey. The morning often begins quietly. Perhaps with yoga as the sun comes up, followed by a simple breakfast and time to settle into the day.
Ayurveda in Sri Lanka is not simply about booking a massage. A retreat usually begins with a consultation with an Ayurvedic doctor, who takes time to understand you before recommending treatments for your stay. From there, each day takes its own pace.
Traditional oils, herbal preparations and different therapies may form part of the programme. Treatments are followed by time to rest rather than rushing straight into another activity. Food is part of the experience too. Meals are generally lighter and prepared with wellbeing in mind, often drawing on local ingredients, herbs and spices.
Between treatments there may be yoga, meditation, a walk through the gardens or simply a few hours with nothing planned.
And perhaps that is what feels most different.
Sri Lanka holidays can easily become a list of places to visit Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella, Yala and the coast. Inside an Ayurveda retreat, the reason for stopping somewhere changes. You are not there to see another attraction.
You are there to give yourself some time. By evening, the pace remains quiet. Dinner, perhaps a walk, and an early night before another morning begins.
You may leave with a greater understanding of Ayurveda. You may simply leave feeling rested.
Either way, for a few days, Sri Lanka asks you to travel differently.
